Ford unveiled the Thunderbird at the Detroit Auto Show on February 20, 1954. The first production car came off the line on September 9, 1954, and went on sale on October 22, 1954 as a 1955 model. The Thunderbird was created to act as a retort to the Chevrolet Corvette and was also the first mass-produced edition of all the Ford Thunderbird models. A total of 53,166 units were produced for the three model years 1955-1957. This specific model is a 1955 Thunderbird born January 27th 1955 in the Los Angeles plant and then shipped up the Seattle area for sale. Originally offered in a two tone turquoise and white paint job the Thunderbird has been color changed to snowshoe white with matching snowshoe white hardtop. The body of the Thunderbird shows well and all of the chrome is still in good condition with minimal imperfections. The exhaust pipes still exit through the twin bumper guards which are bolted to the rear bumper. This Thunderbird was ordered originally with the soft top convertible option and still retains the metal frame of the top behind the seats without any canvas on it now. This Personal Luxury Car as Ford called it is powered by its original 292ci V8 engine producing 198 horsepower and 280lb-ft of torque. All of the power and torque is transferred to the ground through the optional ordered 3 speed manual transmission equipped with overdrive. The interior of the Thunderbird has been also color changed to a two tone black vinyl with white vinyl inserts and white piping. Other features of the interior include a telescopic steering column, AM radio, and 4 way power seats as well as a factory tachometer. The Thunderbird rolls down the street on Hankook thin white wall radial tires wrapped around 15-inch steel wheels that have been painted red and are accented by period correct Thunderbird chrome wheel caps. The Thunderbird comes to a smooth and strong stop through its 4 wheel power drum brakes without pulling to left or right. With a little over 100,000 documented original miles this Ford has been owned by the same family for roughly 30 years and has always had a home in the garage which is why it has lasted the test of time. Here is your chance to own a first generation purpose built, 2 seater convertible that can be restored to highest level or even driven and toured without hesitation!
