1929 Packard 640 Custom Eight 7-Passenger Touring/Phaeton

We are told this Packard was delivered on June 29, 1929 by Packard Motor Car Company of New York to the City of New York as a parade car for Mayor Jimmy Walker. The flamboyant Walker was in the midst of campaigning for his second term as Mayor, and this Packard certainly would have fit the style of the man who was dubbed Beau James by his constituants and detractors, alike.

While commonly referred to as a Phaeton, Packard officially catalogued this body style as #370 - a 7 Passenger Touring model on a 140 inch wheelbase.

Following Walkers resignation from office amid scandal in 1932, the Packard passed to several owners before receiving a frame-off restoration in 1986 by renowned marque expert, Robert Turnquist and his company, Hibernia Auto Restorations in New Jersey. This was an exacting and painstakingly correct restoration as only Turnquist and his staff could do. Nothing was left undone to return this car to showroom condition.

After being shown and toured in the east, several years ago this car made its way to Oregon, where it has also been toured on Classic Car Club of America CARavan events, as well as garnering top awards when shown. (It recently received 97.5 points in CCCAjudging, as well as earning Best in Class for open Classic Cars at the Forest Grove Concours dElegance - one of the top shows in the west. Testament to the top condition which this car remains in today.)

Please see photos for the current condition, which is spectacular. While toured, this car has always been maintained and pampered by Packard specialists. The 385 cubic inch straight eight starts easily and runs whisper-quiet, with plenty of power and torque. High-speed gears make it a pleasure to drive on the highway. The transmission shifts easily. 4-wheel mechanical brakes stop the car smooth and straight. The owner reports it is a real pleasure to drive. The paint and chrome are exceptional, as are the trim and interior. Beautiful russet-brown leather covers the seats and door panels. Wool carpeting. All components are in excellent condition.

This car is highly-optioned with dual Pilot Ray driving lights, which turn with the front wheels to light the road on curves; added discreet turn signals for safe maneuvering in modern traffic; rear compartment folding windshield; window-mounted spotlight; Goddess of Speed radiator mascot; dual sidemounted spare tires; dual rear tail lights; trunk rack with trunk containing fitted luggage, a full set of side curtains and top boot for the car.

If you are looking for one of the finest Packard phaetons available today for touring or show, with a wonderful provenance and impeccable restoration, this is the one.

We will happily sell to buyers worldwide and can assist in shipping arrangements to anywhere.
